So this is the beat Charles Hamilton CLAIMS he created. In short, when I was in Austin to perform and check out SxSW, I caught his set. He performed one of his tracks, ‘Shinin,’ which I thought was dope. However, come to find out the instrumental that he used for that track is a beat I produced a while back. After he was done performing, I let him know that I produced the beat and asked him where he got it from. In the back of my mind I know that the only place he really could have gotten it from was off my MySpace page. When I told him I produced the track and liked his lyrics, he still continued to say that HE produced the track with some dude….FALSE. He said he cleared the sample and that he is the one singing ‘Shinin’ in the background and also that his homeboy was playing the keys on the track.
Now mind you, the background ‘Shinin’ vocals that he claims he laid were not laid in the studio at all. I know this because I sampled them by singing directly into the MPC.
Basically, the Frankie Beverly & Maze sample at the beginning is from when I put the beat up on MySpace. The whole point of putting that part in the track was to show that I was about to produce, from that part, my own version of the sample. So, if you don’t hear the Frankie Beverly & Maze sample in the MP3 I am sending you, that is why.
I TRULY BELIEVE THAT LAST NIGHT WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICAL MOMENTS I HAVE EVER WITNESSED..... THE VIBE WAS STRONG...SO MUCH FAM IN THE HOUSE...2 MANY NAMES TO NAME... YOU JUST HAD TO BE THERE.... I CAUGHT THIS POST FROM THE HOMIE///PROH MIC/// AND I THINK HE GAVE A DOPE BREAKDOWN OF THE NITE....THIS WAS HISTORY....REAL TALK.... THANK GOD I WAS THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This shit was incredibly FILTHY. If you missed last nights performance of the "Suite For Ma Dukes" Orchestra you truly missed something special. Me being a producer, I can't even explain what I was feeling watching this orchestra do MUCH justice to Jay Dee's catalogue. These cats were playing shit off his beat tapes, Welcome to Detroit, Donuts, and various cuts he did with other artists as well as songs he sample from artists like Herbie Hancock, Amad Jamal and Gap Mangione. And the special guests (Bilal, Posdenous, Talib, Common, Amp Fidler, Dwele) sealed the deal. Extra super big-ups to Miguel Atwood Ferguson for arranging and conducting the music in a way that showed just how great Jay Dee was. He gave the beats bridges and preludes and what not giving them an even more musical feel. You can tell Miguel really felt the music spiritually.
Here's the set the orchestra played:
-Anitiquity -Nag Champa -Find A Way -Fall In Love -Welcome To Detroit Intro (WOW! I couldnt believe they came with this) -Donuts Intro- Alternate version (this shit was too nasty) -Dont Nobody Care About Us (with NO drums. I think this was Miguels favorite track) -Jealousy (I believe they played the O.G sample then the S.V. version) -? (I couldnt figure out what Dilla beat was being played here) -The Official (first they played the O.G. version. Then the Jaylib one) -Untitled (No words could explain this. These cats was even doin the drops. "You know you ca-can't stop...ca-can't quit", RIDICULOUS! They even played the "Fantastic!" interlude that comes right after this song)
THEN the features started coming out:
-Runnin' (Diana Moreira sang the lyrics to the original sampled song while Bilal, Amp Fidler, Shafiq Husayn did background vocals. -Dont Nobody Care About Us (WITH Karriem Riggins on the drums. WHEW!) -A.N.G.E.L (Dwele came out and sang the lyrics.) -Reminice (They played the original sample then Bilal came out and killed the song it as usual).
Then they finished the night off with: -Stakes Is High (They played the Amad Jamal version 1st then then the original De La version and Posdenous and Talib came out and performed it. Then they brought all the guests back out and started chanting "VIBE!"....."VIBRATION!"
This shit was like church LOL. I think I even forgot to list a couple more beats but you get the gist of it.
Friends and associates, As you may have heard through the grapevine by now, Daptone was broken into last night. Unfortunately, there was a lot of equipment (mics, pre-amps, monitors, turntables, guitars, amps, computers, etc.) stolen and damaged. It is going to take us a while to go through everything and take full stock of what was stolen, and we are not supposed to touch anything until the cops come back to collect fingerprints so we can only guess what's missing from some mic drawers and cabinets. And, no, we did not have insurance. We had been shopping around with different companies earlier this month but had not signed a check, so nothing was insured. We are working on replacing the gate in front, installing an alarm system, and getting insurance, but it is President's day so it's not going as quickly as we would have liked. Nydia's computer was stolen (which wasn't backed up) and the modems/ phone system was ripped out, so we'll be relatively out of commission for a few days.
I would like to ask for everyone's help first in keeping an eye out for all of our stuff showing up on ebay/craigslist/local music shops, and secondly (and more realistically) keeping an eye out for good deals on headphones, mics, pre-amps, etc. I could really use a heads up on any kind of studio package for sale or studio equipment to be possibly bought or borrowed as soon as possible. We have a session scheduled for Friday to lay down some music for (I know this sounds surreal) Rod Stewart, and I'm going to have to get the studio running by then. I know I'm going to need to find headphones, cables, mics, and pre-amps by then. I'm not sure what else yet.
List of gear and Gabriel Roth's letter continued below... FROM GABRIEL ROTH
Upon first glance we are definitely missing: Fender Super Guitar Amp in case Fender Deluxe Guitar Amp A whole bunch of headphones and wires Nydia's HP laptop computer One Desktop MacIntosh Computer One Purple Audio API style lunchbox with four Purple Audio Biz mic pre-amps 2 Yamaha NS10 monitors Vintage Harmony Rocket Guitar One steel string acoustic guitar Martin Tenor sax in a gig bag Technics 1200 turntable Ion USB turntable Teac Receiver/stereo amp Sony dual deck CD burner/player All of our modem/phone system stuff was ripped out and taken. A whole bunch of condensor and dynamic microphones (I still need to figure out exactly what's missing) The power supply for my Trident console was tossed and the board was moved (probably not gently) so the status of that is still questionable. A baldwin organ was tossed and is probably broken. Lacie External hard drive Over the next few days, as we sort out the rubble, we are going to figure out what else we lost.
We are putting in a roll down front gate, alarm system, and finally getting our insurance happening this week. We are also going to hire a security guard to watch the house for tonight as the cops and alarm guy seemed pretty confident that they will be back with a truck now that they've seen what's in here.
Thanks for keeping eyes open for us. AND PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ALONG TO ANYONE YOU THINK MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP US.
Thankfully, we all still have our health, ambition, tape machines, and sense of humor in tact. You can slow us down, but you can't stop us. Sleep well knowing we here at Daptone will continue to...
Keep putting Soul up,
Gabriel Roth
P.S. On a lighter note, it seems like the burglars did drop a few items in order to lift Alex's old safe out of here, which was VERY heavy, VERY unwieldy, and also VERY EMPTY
